Just learned a new term - Normal Weight Obesity or NWO
Just learned a new term - Normal Weight Obesity or NWO. This condition occurs when someone has a normal BMI (18.5–24.9) but carries excessive body fat (above 30% for men and 35% for women).
Estimates suggest that 5% to 20% of adults may have NWO, and the number is growing. Essentially, their weight appears normal on the scale, but they still face an increased risk of health problems associated with obesity.
Once again, this reinforces the idea that measuring weight alone isn’t very useful. It’s far more important to track body fat and lean tissue using a high-quality body composition scale like Withings or by getting DEXA scans - or ideally, both.
